Tie-ing It All Together

June is Men’s Health month at Total Balance Chiropractic!  We are constantly inspired by the men in our lives who are great achievers: they provide, encourage and entertain us… and from time to time, have been known to burn the candle at both ends and sacrifice self-care for higher achievement.

According to the CDC (1):
– 34.5% of men over the age of 20 are obese
– 32.6% of men over the age of 20 suffer from hypertension

Even the best intentions (of handling responsibility, managing a busy work and family life) can lead to poor results if you neglect yourself in the meantime.  Don’t have time to devote to a comprehensive self care plan?  It’s okay!  Here are a few ways you can start “tie-ing” together your physical, nutritional and emotional health:

Physical  One of the best things you can do for your health is to have an accountability partner.  The first person we will often neglect is ourselves – having a work out buddy, mentor or personal trainer creates a personal support team for you; just having this system in place increases your overall chance of finally hitting those fitness goals.

Nutritional  A great motto in regards to nutrition is “Eat For The Health You Want!”  Remember that no one meal is going to make-or-break your overall health, but it is the little decisions you make everyday that put points in the positive health or negative health column – and eventually your body will cash in!  The key to healthy eating starts with the foods you surround yourself with.  Buy healthy snacks (such as trail mix, hard-boiled eggs, jerky and fruit) to keep in the office, car and home to minimize impulse purchasing and poor dietary choices.  If you don’t personally do the grocery shopping, create a short list for the person who does – it’s likely they will be more than happy to get you some healthy goodies!

Emotional  The truth is simple: no matter your personality – whether you are soft-hearted or a hard charger – your emotional health is real and it is important.  When you don’t manage your emotional stressors in a healthy and productive way, they can creep up into your life as disease and illness (2).  Quality downtime and stress relief is essential to living a sustainable, well-balanced life… and we aren’t talking about grabbing a beer in front of the TV!  Find a stress relief activity that positively impacts your body and gives it what it needs to de-stress: a bike ride, a walk or run, breathing exercises or even yoga.  More and more men are discovering amazing health benefits from a regular yoga practice!  At Total Balance Chiropractic, we find that men who regularly engage in yoga are more aware of their bodies and have less overall stress.
